<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display apparatus which has an enlarged color reproduction range without complicating the apparatus and without making the apparatus large. <P>SOLUTION: The projection display apparatus 201 is provided with a light source 220, a color separating means (color wheel 216) for timewise separating the light emitted from the light source 220 into different color light beams, and an optical modulating means (liquid crystal light valve 216) for modulating the color light separated by the color separating means.
