PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical element having a reflecting film having low reflectance over a wide wavelength band. SOLUTION: A semiconductor optical element comprises an active layer; a multilayer structure including a waveguide layer 10 consisting of two clad layers sandwiching the active layer; and a multilayer reflecting film 20 formed on at least one end face part of a pair of opposite end face parts of the multilayer structure. The total sumΣn<SB>i</SB>d<SB>i</SB>of the product n<SB>i</SB>d<SB>i</SB>of reflectance n<SB>i</SB>of each film of the multilayer reflecting film and the film thickness d<SB>i</SB>satisfies the relation ofΣn<SB>i</SB>d<SB>i</SB>>λ/4, and moreover, the valueΔλ/λobtained by dividing the continued wavelength band widthΔλincluding the wavelengthλ, which is within the range of -1% to +2.0 %, by the wavelengthλon the basis of the reflectance R (λ) when the reflectance is the wavelengthλis 0.062 or more.
