PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive unit for a rolling stock, which controls human power/cost required for maintenance and also is gentle for global environment, using a power accumulation facility together with a power-generating unit driven by an engine. SOLUTION: This drive unit is equipped with a converter device 3 which converts AC power generated by a generator 2 driven by an engine 1 into DC power, an inverter device 4 which converts DC power into AC power, an accumulator 8 which has the function of charging and discharging the DC power, and a motor 5 which drives the rolling stock. When the inverter device is supplied with the DC power generated by the converter device and the DC power generated by the accumulator, this sets the accumulation energy, accumulated in the accumulator as an accumulation amount management criteria pattern with respect to vehicle speed in a controller 11, and controls the DC power that the converter device generates, according to the difference between the amount of accumulation by this pattern and the amount of actual accumulation of the accumulator.
