PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether printing is stopped or continued by making a decision whether a head is facing a medium or the medium is drawn out. SOLUTION: In an impact printer comprising a paper sensor for detecting presence of a paper and performing printing on a paper by repeating an operation for carrying the paper in the carrying direction and an operation for printing on the paper by moving a head in the scanning direction alternately, and stopping print operation if the output from the paper sensor varies when the carrying operation is not performed, a decision is made that the rear end of the paper slipped down from the paper sensor if the output therefrom varies within a prescribed time after ending the carrying operation and the print operation is not stopped.
