COMBUSTION CONTROL DEVICE FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion control device for an internal combustion engine capable of preventing worsening of black smoke, in steady rich combustion control for an NOx occlusion catalyst.

SOLUTION: The combustion control device comprises an exhaust passage communicated with the cylinder of an internal combustion engine; the NOx occlusion catalyst situated in an exhaust passage and occluding NOx in exhaust gas during lean combustion and discharging and reducing occluded NOx by effecting rich combustion; and a combustion control means to prohibit rich combustion during a specified period when a temperature correlation value in a cylinder exceeds a given value in a period during which rich combustion is effected in steadiness to discharge NOx occluded to the NOx occlusion catalyst and an S component attached to the NOx occlusion catalyst.
