<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lower limb exercise device equipped with a muscle oppression assist mechanism at the time of exercise, capable of adjusting and monitoring the oppression corresponding to the flexing angle of a leg and the exercise pattern and securing the safety of the exercise, and a method of controlling the same. <P>SOLUTION: The lower limb exercise device comprises the muscle oppression assist mechanisms 10 in a lower limb splint 2 and a thigh splint 4 for pressing a lower limb and a thigh of an exerciser 1 and a synchronous control part 14. The synchronous control part 14 receives the angle of a knee/hip joint of the exerciser calculated by a lower limb driving part 3b, a thigh driving part 5 and an angle sensor part 7a from the lower limb exercise device 9, produces a command value of the pressing force, and transmits the command value to the muscle oppression assist mechanism 10. The synchronous control part 14 also receives information on the excessive oppression from the muscle oppression assist mechanism 10 and transmits a command to ease the restraint of limbs to a control part 8.
