PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine torque controller which prevents the belt of a V-belt type continuous variable transmission from slipping even if an accelerator is depressed during the initialization of a step motor. SOLUTION: The torque controller controls the output torque of a vehicle engine before the initialization of a step motor if information such as an actual change gear ratio or the like is not stored in an EEPROM 28 due to the failure of a back-up power source 29 or the like when the step motor 27 is initialized while the engine is being started in a vehicle or the vehicle is at a standstill. As a result, even if the accelerator is depressed during the initialization of the step motor 27 which cannot secure a sufficient primary pulley pressure, the output torque of the engine is limited and consequently a large torque is not input to the V-belt type continuous variable transmission, so that the V-belt does not slip between the primary and secondary pulleys.
