PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact high-performance variable focal length lens system. SOLUTION: A zoom lens is equipped with a 1st lens group G1 having negative refractive power, a 2nd lens group G2 having positive refractive power and a 3rd lens group G3 having positive refractive power in order from an object side. The 1st lens group G1 is constituted of a doublet consisting of a lens L11 having positive refractive power and a lens L12 having negative refractive power in order from the object side, and the 2nd lens group G2 includes an aperture diaphragm S, a 1st positive lens L21 turning its convex surface toward the object side, a 2nd positive lens L22 turning its convex surface toward the object side and a negative lens L23 turning its concave surface toward an image surface side in order from the object side, and the 3rd lens group G3 includes at least one or more lenses L3.
