PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method 400 for detecting an emergency fault of a process sensor. SOLUTION: The method includes a phase 406 for defining the output noise component of a sensor and a phase 408 for comparing the output noise component with the noise signature of the history output of the sensor, based on at least either the span area of the sensor or the operating condition of a process.
