The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of polyether polyols having an average molecular weight of at least 2000, comprising (i) reacting an initiator with a crude alkylene oxide stream in the presence of a catalyst to obtain an intermediate product having an average molecular weight of from 200 to 1100; and (ii) reacting said intermediate product further with one or more alkylene oxides to yield polyether polyols.
