PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a handrail in an elevator car capable of carrying a large number of cargo into the elevator car by solving the problem that large furniture can not be put into the car due to the interference with the handrail in the case of relocation or the like by extending the area in the car by easily retracting the handrail when the handrail provided in the car is not used. SOLUTION: The elevator is equipped with a cross rod 2 provided in the elevator car, a retraction rod 6 which is connected to the cross rod by penetrating through an inner room wall 5 and retracts the cross rod 2 into the inner room wall 5 side when the handrail is not used, and a insertion rod 8 which is mounted to the retraction rod 6 and fixes the cross rod 2 to the inner room wall 5 with a prescribed clearance when the handrail is used.
