PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator allowing improvement of working efficiency and reduction of working cost by dispensing with a member dedicated to cutting work. SOLUTION: In this elevator, both ends of a governor rope 26 are connected with an elevator car 23 going up and down in a hoistway 21, an upper loop section of the governor rope 26 is wound on a governor installed in a machine room above the hoistway 21, and lifting speed of the elevator car is controlled by monitoring the speed of the governor rope 26 turned and moved in cooperation with the lifting of the governor rope 26. The tension state of the governor rope 26 is kept by load of a laterally two-divided weight 30 supported turnably where one weight 34 is connected to a lower loop section of the governor rope 26 to be fixed and the other weight 36 is positioned under the weight 34. When the governor rope 26 is cut, the tension state of the governor rope 26 is released by positioning the weight 36 under the weight 34 and to be ground to the floor surface 21a of the hoistway 21.
