PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuously variable transmission capable of being embodied in a small and compact construction and managing well with an FF car. SOLUTION: The continuously variable transmission of toroidal type is equipped with a transmission input shaft 1 to be driven by an engine, a toroidal transmission mechanism CVT, and a planetary gear mechanism PG. The input discs 11 and 21 of the toroidal transmission mechanism are coupled with the transmission input shaft 1 through a first input drive and driven gears 2 and 4. The planetary gear mechanism has a first and a second sun gear S1, S2, a first and a second pinion P1, P2, a first and a second carrier C1, C2, and a first and a second ring gear R1, R2. The arrangement further includes an IVT clutch 40 and a torque split clutch 45 to make the engage-disengage control of the input rotation to the first carrier and the second sun gear and a countershaft 35 coupled with the second carrier and taking out the output rotation.
