PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a camera equipped with a lighting device for a semi-transmissive or transmissive liquid crystal display, and to reduce its costs. SOLUTION: The lighting device for the liquid crystal display of the camera equipped with a stroboscope and a strobe dimmer sensor for detecting a quantity of emitted stroboscopic light is provided with the semi-transmissive or transmissive liquid crystal display for displaying a imaged image, an illumination means for illuminating the liquid crystal display from the back, a lightness detecting means for detecting lightness around the liquid crystal display, and a light quantity control means for performing light quantity control including turning on and turning off the illumination means in accordance with the lightness detected by the lightness detecting means, and the lightness detecting means is also used as the strobe dimmer sensor.
