PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium excellent in dispersibility, especially in dispersibility of ultra fine particle alloy powder, and excellent in filling property and orientation, and durability, abrasion resistance, heat resistance and bonding property with a non magnetic suporting material, etc., of the magnetic layer. SOLUTION: This resin is characterized by exhibiting a difference of 0.06 dl/g between an intrinsic viscosity measured in a mixed solvent of 2-butanone/toluene=(50/50)(weight ratio) and the intrinsic viscosity measured in a mixed solvent of 2-butanone/cyclohexanone=(50/50) and without containing a halogen atom in its molecule, and the magnetic recording medium obtained by using the resin as a binder is also provided.
