PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent occurrence of color shift and density uneveness caused by the impact force when a secondary transfer roller abuts on an intermediate transfer medium and their speed difference. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus having a transfer roller (13) capable of being abutted on and separated from an image carrier (5) is provided with: a preliminary rotation mechanism (15) which preliminarily rotates the transfer roller (13) when the transfer roller (13) is separated from the image carrier, thereby mechanically separating the preliminary rotation mechanism from the transfer roller when the transfer roller abuts on the image carrier.
