PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a torque sensor capable of improving the accuracy in detecting the torque by supplying a stable excitation signal, and resolving the time lag from the generation of the output by the torque sensor to the detection of failure by a microcomputer. SOLUTION: In this torque sensor 10 comprising an ECU (microcomputer) 60 for detecting the torque applied to a torque transmitting axle on the basis of the output of detecting coils 20, 22 when an excitation coil 16 is excited, a clock frequency of the ECU 60 is divided by a frequency divider 60a, and the excitation signal composed of sine wave is produced on the basis of a rectangular wave obtained by dividing the frequency, and supplied to the excitation coil 16. A failure detecting part 98 produces a signal indicating the failure of the torque sensor 10 on the basis of the output of the detecting coils 20, 22, and outputs the signal to the ECU 60.
