<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve display quality of a display device which realizes a display mode and a mirror mode by switching between them and is made thin and lightweight. <P>SOLUTION: The display device 100A is provided with a reflection type polarizing plate 110 disposed on the observer's side of a liquid crystal panel 140, a polarizing plate 150 disposed on the rear face side of the liquid crystal panel 140 and a reflection layer 136 with reflective directivity disposed on the rear face side of a liquid crystal layer 149. The reflection type polarizing plate 110 transmits first polarized light and, at the same time, reflects second polarized light with an axis of polarization intersecting that of the first polarized light. The polarizing plate 150 transmits third polarized light and, at the same time, absorbs or reflects fourth polarized light with an axis of polarization intersecting that of the third polarized light. The liquid crystal panel 140 converts at least a part of the third polarized light into the first polarized light and emits it.
