PURPOSE: A method for preparing 2-nitro-2'-hydroxy-3',5'-di(α,α -dimethylbenzyl)azobenzene is provided, to improve reactivity and to allow the product to be obtained without filtration, separation or recovery process. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of adding HCl, H2SO4 or azo acid to 2-nitroaniline to prepare the diazonium salt represented by the formula 2; and reacting the diazonium salt with the 2,4-di(α,α-dimethylbenzyl)phenol represented by the formula 3 in a solvent comprising a nonpolar solvent and water in the presence of a base, to prepare the 2-nitro-2'-hydroxy-3',5'-di(α,α-dimethylbenzyl)azobenzene represented by the formula 1. Preferably the nonpolar solvent is at least one selected from the group consisting of o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, ethylbenzene, toluene and benzene; and the base is at least one weak base selected from the group consisting of sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and potassium carbonate, or a mixture of the weak base and sodium hydroxide.
