PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus constituted so that a printing time is shortened by eliminating the unnecessary supply operation of ink because a residual ink amount necessary for printing is calculated on the basis of data such as a printing mode, the size and type of paper, and the life of a valve is enhanced because the unnecessary connecting operation of the valve is eliminated. SOLUTION: The recording apparatus has a feed means for feeding an ink jet recording head, which can discharge ink to apply recording to a recording medium, and a recording medium, a carriage loaded with the recording head, the first ink tank mounted on the carriage, a second ink tank arranged outside the carriage, a detection means for detecting the residual amount of the ink in the first ink tank and an ink amount calculating means for calculating the maximum use amount of ink of a next page on the basis of the recording mode data of the next page. When the residual amount of the ink in the first ink tank detected by the detection means is smaller than the amount of the ink calculated by the ink amount calculating means, the valve is opened to supply the ink of the second ink tank to the first ink tank.
