The lightning conductor has a test device (10,11) which generates a signal indicating operating state of the lightning conductor. A transformer (THT) sets up a high-voltage discharge (2) to ionize air in the region the lightning conductor. A sensor (C2) supplies data to a transmitter (12,14) which sends data to a receiver (17) that then passes the data to a communication network (19,20).
