PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element that has high brightness, is hard to cause concentration quenching, and has an emission peak at a relatively short wavelength. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by general formula (1), and is used for an organic electroluminescent element. In the formula, A is an aromatic hydrocarbon residue or aromatic heterocyclic residue that has no substituent group, or has a substituent group having a Hammet constant of the substituent groupσp in the range of 0<σp<0.9; X and Y are, each independently, a sulfur atom, an oxygen atom, -NR<SP>1</SP>-, -N=, a selenium atom or -CH=; the dotted lines are each a single bond or a double bond (where R<SP>1</SP>is an alkyl group, an aromatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic heterocyclic group that may have a substituent group); and Z and B are, each independently, an aromatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic heterocyclic group.
