An underground cavity installation for storage of liquefied natural gas or other fluid with similar properties, the installation comprising a liquid and gas tight lining covering the inner surface of a container volume formed by insulation blocks that are assembled and supported from the cavity wall so that a void space is formed between the cavity wall and the insulation blocks, said void space being occupied by a stabilized, porous and gas permeable fill material that allows gas leakage detection and gas pressure relief in the event of leakage from the container volume. The invention also relates to a method for leakage detection and evacuation of vaporized storage fluid from outside the container.
