PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of automatically applying proper compression to the data of each region in response to the requirements by a user as to the speed, image quality, or capacity prioritized. SOLUTION: Upon the receipt of a designation entry of a compression processing mode (S501), the image processing apparatus separates a character region, a graphic region, and a photo region from the received image data and extracts them (S508), uses a compression system whose processing speed is highest among a plurality of compression systems designated for each of the region data when a speed preferential mode is set, uses a compression system whose image quality deterioration is lowest among a plurality of the compression systems designated for each of the region data when a image quality preferential mode is set, or uses a compression system whose compression rate is highest among a plurality of the compression systems designated for each of the region data when a size preferential mode is set to apply the compression processing to the respective region data (S509 to S511).
