PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an end detecting device which can contribute to shortening of a printing time of a thermal printer. SOLUTION: A timing generation circuit 59 makes side end edge detecting sensors 20 and 21 detect a main scanning direction position of a side end edge of a recording paper 10 every time each of fixing lamps 27 and 28 is turned off at the time of optical fixing. In other words, a signal is transmitted to a D/A converter 56 with a timing when the fixing lamps 27 and 28 are turned off, thereby turning on LEDs 22 and 23, and a conversion signal is transmitted to an A/D converter 55 to convert outputs of CCD line sensors 24 and 25 to digital data. A change-over switch 57 for LED and a change-over switch 58 for CCD receive a control signal from a system controller 40 and changes over the side end edge detecting sensors 20 and 21 with a predetermined timing.
