PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent which imparts liquid crystal alignment property by being irradiated with a linearly or partially polarized radiation without rubbing treatment and forms a liquid crystal display element high in thermal stability of liquid crystal alignment and excellent in display characteristics, and to provide the liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal aligning agent containing a polymer having two or more specified photosensitive groups on a side chain is provided. Thereby the liquid crystal alignment layer, formed by using the liquid crystal aligning agent and having a vertical alignment property, has the alignment controllability in an in-plane direction of the substrate toward liquid crystal molecules under voltage application. As a result, the excellent display characteristics are also obtained in the case the liquid crystal alignment layer is used for a vertical alignment liquid crystal display element.
