PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a speckle noise and the deterioration of the image quality in an image display such as a projection display or the like. SOLUTION: The optical device of illumination of the image display 1 which displays an image by irradiating a GLV6 (a spacial modulating element) with laser light and modulating the laser light L on the basis of an image signal input to the GLV, is provided with a polarized light rotation means 20 which equally divides the polarized elements of the laser light into a P-polarized element and the S-polarized element, a polarized light beam splitter 21 which separates the P-polarized element and a S-polarized element which are equally divided with the polarized light rotation means, and an optical path difference generation means 22 which generates an optical path difference equal to or larger than the coherence length of the laser light between the the laser light having the P-polarized element and the laser light having the S-polarized element.
