The tilting and oscillating valve actuator system has an oscillating motor (4) turning a shaft (5) with high-lift (6) and low-lift (8) cams. One or other of the cams can engage a roller (10a) on an adjustable rocker (10) pressing on the valve (2) stem. There is a height- adjustable pivot (14) at the end of the rocker remote from the valve stem. A spring (12) is fastened to the cylinder head (3) and bears against a pin (13) on the end of the shaft to load the shaft toward one or other of the two cams. The amount of valve lift obtained depends on the chosen operating arc (7) of the shaft.
