The assembly to produce a printing plate, to be fitted around the plate cylinder of a printing press and especially for offset printing, has a blank plate fitted around the plate cylinder and an illustrating unit to form the dots by a laser beam (15) for the text and illustrations to be printed. To position the illustration head (13), the spindle (8) of the belt drive is coupled to the plate cylinder (3) through a gearing (21) composed of a belt gearing (20,22,23) or a cogwheel gear. A switched clutch (18) is between the spindle and the plate cylinder, on the spindle axis.
