PURPOSE: A recording/playback device is provided to offer a scrambler and the scrambling method fit to a high density optical disc system by controlling a generation period of random data. CONSTITUTION: The scrambler includes a random data generator generating the random data by a 32K period in order to scramble the data having a data structure that one sector or one data frame is 2K, and an error correction unit is 64K. The random data generator includes the 15bit serial registers(r0-r14) providing the random data by performing left-shift synchronized with a clock input for scrambling, and an XOR gate outputting an XOR result of the output of the highest and a low register to the lowest register. The scrambler outputs the scramble data by respectively performing the XOR of the output of the low registers and the 1 byte input data(D0-D7) after left-shifting the register 8 times.
