The invention relates to a measuring system for contactlessly detecting positions of the piston rod of a piston/cylinder unit by means of a measuring sensor which plunges into an axial bore of the piston rod, which can be adjusted relative to it, and develops different output signals for representing the respective piston positions depending on the position of the piston rod. The system comprises a transmitter/receiver head as part of a measuring sensor at the free end of a measuring sensor holder protruding into the piston rod bore, the transmitter/receiver head being aligned towards the bottom of the piston rod bore which is used as reflection object. The transfer time of the signals transmitted pulse by pulse from the transmitter/receiver head, reflected from the above-mentioned bottom and received again is used as a measure of the instantaneous position of the piston rod.
