PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new polymeric material affording a solid polyelectrolyte especially excellently usable at high temperatures by introducing a sulfonic acid group or a phosphonic acid group into a polybenzazole compound having excellent properties in aspects of heat and solvent resistances, mechanical characteristics, etc.

SOLUTION: The purpose is achieved by using a specific polybenzimidazole compound in which the sulfonic acid group is introduced onto a benzene ring having an imidazole ring bonded thereto and the sulfonic acid group and/or the phosphonic acid group are introduced onto an aromatic ring to which the imidazole ring is not bonded.
