The building block comprises a hard hollow cube (1) with push-in pin (22) projecting from one side and with openings in the remaining five sides to build up adjoining blocks. A protective body (2) of flexible soft material is formed with a hollow central tube (21) with pin (22) at one end and socket (211) at the other to receive a pin of another block. The protective body has four arms (24) each with a diagonal strip extending from the opening of the second end face remote from the pin up to a corner of this end face over one of the two diagonals, and also having an edge strip (24) which is attached to the side edges of the basic block whereby the pin projects out of the opening over the facing end face.
