PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for manufacturing a carbon nanotube suitable as a hydrogen occlusion material. SOLUTION: The carbon nanotube 5 has its interior communicating with the exterior via a jet hole 17 and a communicating conduit 18 of a substrate 3. The carbon nanotube 5 is formed by preparing the substrate 3 comprising a zeolite film having several jet holes 17 on a synthesis surface 4 on which the carbon nanotube 5 is synthesized and synthesizing the carbon nanotube 5 on the synthesis surface 4 while discharging a synthetic gas from the jet hole 17 coming from the back side 19 of the substrate 3 through the communicating conduit 18. Here, the jet hole 17 is nanometer-sized and is smaller than the diameter of the carbon nanotube 5 but large enough to discharge gas. A material carrying the obtained carbon nanotube 5 functions as an excellent hydrogen occlusion material. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
