PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high strength iron based material which has high frictional force, and to provide an iron based member which is obtained by using the same material, has high strength, and has reduced setting and high frictional force even when used over a long period. SOLUTION: The iron based material is obtained by dispersing a compound or compounds comprising at least one element selected from the group 4a elements and 5a elements into a matrix consisting of iron or an iron alloy. The compound or compounds are at least one kind selected from carbides, borides, nitrides and composite compounds thereof, and also, the volume fraction of the compound or compounds is 5 to 30%.
