Dense barium oxide is produced by heating a mixture of barium carbonate and carbon to a temperature of 1800 DEG to 2200 DEG C. until a product containing at least 85% barium oxide is obtained, removing the product from the heating zone and subjecting it to a reduced pressure of not more than 450 mm. Hg. The mixture may be heated in an electric arc furnace to obtain a molten product in the region of the arc surrounded by a solidified crucible of reaction mixture, and then the molten product is withdrawn while allowing the crucible to remain in the furnace, and subjected to the reduced pressure. |
