<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective liquid crystal display element which yields bright display in a transmissive mode, has high contrast, is able to be designed with reduced thickness and exhibits little viewing angle dependence. <P>SOLUTION: The transflective liquid crystal display element is equipped with: a first substrate with a transparent electrode; a second substrate with a transflective electrode having a reflective function region and a transmissive function region formed thereon; a nematic liquid crystal layer interposed between the first and second substrates; a first optically anisotropic element and a sheet of a polarizing plate disposed on the first substrate; and a second optically anisotropic element and a sheet of a polarizing plate disposed on the second substrate. The first optically anisotropic element consists of an optical retardation film which is a sheet of an aligned polymer film and of which the retardation values Re(λ) at 450, 550 and 650 nm wavelengths (λ) satisfy inequalities Re(450) < Re(550) < Re(650) and 0.2 ≤ Re(λ)/λ≤ 0.3. Furthermore, the second optically anisotropic element is formed of a liquid crystalline polymer substance showing an optically positive uniaxiality and contains a liquid crystal film with a fixed nematic hybrid alignment formed in a liquid crystal state. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
