PURPOSE: A short message service system of an HRPD(High Rate Packet Data) method, and a method therefor are provided to transmit a short message to a specific terminal by using position and status information of the terminal as registered in a server. CONSTITUTION: An AT(Access Terminal)(21) receives and outputs a short message. An SME(Short Message Entity)(27) requests a short message service from the AT(21). An SMSC(Short Message Service Center)(26) receives the short message service request from the SME(27) and transmits a short message to the AT(21). An LIMS(Location Info. Management Server)(25) registers and manages position and status information of the AT(21), receives a registration information request on the AT(21) from the SMSC(26) and provides the position and status information on the AT to the SMSC(26). A PDSN(Packet Data Serving Node)(24) reports the status information on the AT(21) to the LIMS(25) and provides a PPP(Point-to-Point Protocol) connection to the AT(21) so that the AT(21) can receive the short message service. A PCF(Packet Control Function)(23) reports position information on the AT(21) to the LIMS(25) and provides call state change information of the AT(21) to the PDSN(24). An AN(Access Network)(22) receives a short message from the PCF(23) and transmits it to the AT(21).
