PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for purifying exhaust gas capable of reducing harmful components in the exhaust gas and suppressing adverse effects on an engine by excessive temperature rise of the exhaust gas. SOLUTION: In the method for purifying exhaust gas which makes an air-fuel ratio lean or delays the ignition timing under a given operating condition, when the exhaust gas temperature is over a given value, the action for bringing the lean condition or the delay of the ignition timing is stopped.
