<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical frequency shifter which has simple structure, consumes low electric power and can highly efficiently operates even in a high-frequency region like 1 to 100 GHz. <P>SOLUTION: The optical frequency shifter modulates the phase of light passing an optical waveguide 2 in an electro-optic medium 1 and shifts the frequency of the light by a prescribed frequency by both side band components and carrier components generated as a result of the above phase modulation. The optical frequency shifter is provided with: branched optical waveguides 4 to 6 formed by branching the optical waveguide 2 to three; phase modulating means c, d, e, g, h and k for respectively modulating the phases of the respective branched light rays passing the branched optical waveguides 4 to 6 by voltages 11 of the prescribed frequencies of the different phases; optical path difference imparting means c, e, g and k for imparting the optical path differences according to the phases between the optical waveguides 4 to 6; and means 3 for multiplexing the three branched light rays respectively passing the branched optical waveguides 4 to 6 given the optical path differences by the optical path difference imparting means c, e, g and k and respectively subjected to the phase modulation by the phase modulating means c, d, e, g, h and k. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
