PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extracting system and method capable of simplifying the selecting operation of any range desired to be displayed by introducing such a structure that the user is required only to specify a plurality of name information pieces as target for the desired area to be displayed on a map and thereby the specific area including the corresponding point on the map can be set automatically. SOLUTION: The user specifies a plurality of name information pieces (Station A, D-Chome No.E-F, Quarter C, etc.) about any object to be displayed on the map, but is not requested to specify the desired area itself to be displayed. A coordinate deciding part 6a determines the coordinate data of each point corresponding to the specified name information from a data file 2, while an area setting part 6b sets a rectangular area 4 including the point on the basis of the coordinate data obtained, and a data selection part 6c selects the display data for the rectangular area 4 from the data file (map database) 3. If part of any building, address, etc. displayed in the rectangular area 4 ranges out of the area, it may be possible to set an enlarged rectangular area capable of comprehending the whole contents of the area.
