PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a plasma display panel capable of improving dark contrast. SOLUTION: A sub-field which belongs to a leading sub-field group including the leading sub-field of each field includes a selective write addressing process for setting discharge cells to a turn-on discharge cell mode. The sub-field following the leading sub-field group includes a selective delete addressing process for setting discharge cells to a turn-off discharge cell mode by selectively deleting and discharging the discharge cells, and a light emission maintaining process for making only the discharge cells in the turn-on discharge cell mode repeat sustained discharges the number of times corresponding to weighting of the sub-fields. Immediately after the light emission maintaining process in the sub-field at the end of each field, a first deleting process for generating a first deleting discharge between one row electrode of row electrode pairs belonging to discharge cells set to the turn-off discharge cell mode and column electrodes, and a second deleting process for generating a second deleting discharge between the row electrodes of the row electrode pairs belonging the discharge cells set to the turn-on discharge cell mode are provided.
