PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which is always adequately set with a surface light source unit to effectively protect a transparent original. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus has a transparent original platen 4 for installation of the transparent original and a transparent original guide unit 102, the transparent original guide unit 102 for installation of the transparent original to the prescribed position on the original platen 4, the light source unit 102 installable in a plurality of positions in contact with the guide unit 102 and having a surface light source for illuminating the transparent original and an image reading unit 1 for reading the image of the transparent original through the original platen 4. The transparent original is installed in contact with the original platen 4 on the inner side of the guide unit 102 installed on the original platen 4 and the light emitting surface of the light source unit 103 presses the transparent original onto the original platen 4 in contact with the transparent original.
