<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To steadily obtain a full-color image which is free from a color shift, in a color image forming apparatus in which a cleaning blade for removing residual toner, etc., on an image carrier is freely reciprocally moved in the direction of the width of the image carrier. <P>SOLUTION: The cleaning blade 21 is freely reciprocally moved in the direction of the width of a photoreceptor drum by a cam mechanism 20. A cam 25 is freely rotated by a gear 30. A rotation position detection means is provided for detecting the rotation position of the gear. Separately, a suitable means examines a relationship between the direction and the amount of movement of the cleaning blade from a reference position and the direction and the amount of movement of the photoreceptor in the direction of the width of the photoreceptor from a reference position, which accompanies the movement of the cleaning blade. From the result of the detection by the rotation position detection means and the relationship, the direction and the amount of the movement of the photoreceptor drum which accompanies the reciprocal movement of the cleaning blade is obtained.
