PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder and a recording device capable of preventing occurrence of misfeeding, jamming in transport, etc. as improvement of a conventional friction pad separation system involving such a problem that eventual feed of three sheets or more is likely to cause a double feed. SOLUTION: The sheet feeder and recording device has a sheet separating means 14 equipped with a separating nip 15 to separate/feed one by one the rewritable sheets of paper 3 stacked on a lower guide plate 59 and further includes a sheet hold-down member 66 (stopper preceding separating means 76) displaceable between the first position in which the leading edge of each sheet 3 is hindered from intruding to the separating nip 15 when rewritable sheets 3 are set on the lower guide plate 59 and the second position displaced from the first position in which the leading edge of the sheet 3 is admitted to intrude to the separating nip 15 at the time of sheet feed initiated by operation of the means 14 and the number of intruding sheets 3 to the nip 15 is restricted.
