An automotive air filter has a cylindrical fan-fold main body (12) held between two circular end-sections (14a, 14b). The end-section is esp. applied to one or both ends of the cylinder by a hotmelt process and is a sandwich construction with outer elastic layers (18, 20) either side of an elastic layer (16) which is subjected to a supplementary vulcanisation process. The end-disc (14a, 14b) is fabricated from foil. The vulcanised sandwich layer is made of a material from the groups acrylnitrile-butadiene-rubber (NBR), ethylene-acrylate-rubber (AEM), ethylacrylate-rubber (ACM), hydrated acrylnitrile-butadiene-rubber (HBNR) or similar. The vulcanised layer further incorporates aggregates which are mesh-formers or promotors, weighting agents, additices, or mixtures of these e.g. sulphur or peroxide. The accelerating agents are e.g. mercapto compounds. The weighting agents are e.g. silicic acid, soot, talcum. The sandwiched layer has mechanical properties which are similar to those of the disc outer faces. also claimed is a commensurate manufacturing process including further heat treatment of the final filter product.
