Two pieces 10, 16 of thermoplastics material are welded together along one or more weld lines with a separate layer of fabric 30 sandwiched between the two pieces, the fabric 30 being such that its continuity is maintained in the welded region, i.e. it is not destroyed by the welding step. In the embodiment described, the piece 10 is a sheet of plasticized polyvinyl chloride which is first vacuum formed or otherwise shaped and has been prepared by casting a non-foamed skin coat 12 on to a foamed layer 14. The piece 16 is a polyvinyl chloride foam pad having a backing fabric 18. The fabric 30 is an open-weave cotton fabric and may have a slight rayon content. Spaced parallel welds 32 are formed by radio frequency heating with flutings 22 therebetween. The invention is applicable to the manufacture of car seat covers. |
