PURPOSE: A backlight control system and method are provided to control the on/off of a backlight in a mobile terminal and to adjust backlight-on time according to peripheral brightness. CONSTITUTION: If power is supplied to a mobile terminal, an optical sensor measures peripheral brightness and sends the measured brightness value to a control part(400). The control part converts the measured value into a digital value and checks whether the digital value is over a previously stored off critical value(402). In case that the measured value is over the off critical value, the control part turns off the backlight. However, if the measured value is under the off critical value, the control part compares the measured value with level values, determines a level value to which the measured value belongs, and calculates a backlight-on time corresponding to the determined level value(406). Then the control part activates a counter and maintains the backlight-on state during the calculated backlight-on time(408).
