<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the most efficiently purifying condition of a catalyst, when used for decomposing NOx even in an oxidation atmosphere. <P>SOLUTION: The NOx decomposing catalyst 1 can purify both NOx and HC in the most efficient manner when the concentrations of NOx and HC in exhaust gas are in a fixed relationship. The concentrations of NOx and HC in exhaust gas before catalytic operation are therefore set into the fixed relationship. A sensor 7 is provided in front of the catalyst 1 for detecting the concentrations of NOx and HC. A HC smoothing member 8 is provided for averaging a change of HC with time. NOx can be efficiently purified even in any operated condition of an engine, thus achieving high-level exhaust emission control and fuel consumption control at the same time. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
