The cross member in sheet metal monocoque construction for an instrument panel in an automobile has in the steering column region a cast component (24) with a baseplate and longitudinal wall formed on it and which is rigidly connected to a half-shell (12) formed from sheet metal and right angular in cross section, whereby the cast part and half-shell form a closed profile (10). The longitudinal wall protrudes from the baseplate with the distance from one longitudinal edge of the baseplate being half the distance from the other longitudinal edge.
